First Couple of days

The plane ride up here went pretty good.  The flight from Columbia to Atlanta was very good.  The flight attendant who guided myself and the other student was very helpful.  In Atlanta, it was good but the flight attendant wasn't quite as nice as the previous one.  Once we arrived in Denver we met Mr. Brent.  The rest of the day was pretty relaxed.

My roomates are alright.  I feel like as time goes on hopefully I will get to know them better and it will get better with them as well as my counselor.  On Saturday I woke up and my counselor told me what the options were for breakfast and expected me to make it.  I chose a frozen waffle, that sounded like the easiest.  I put it in the toaster, which happens to be right by the sink, took it out and poured what I thought was the syrup on it and brought it over to the table.  As I took my first bite I realized that it wasn't syrup, I had poured dish soap on my waffle!  I also, the same day, tripped on the curb and skinned my knee.  Needless to say Saturday was not the best day - although it got a lot better later on when Alicia Beach picked me up and took me to a party. At the party, I hung out with her and her brother Andrew. Later, her parents, Mr Joe and Miss Karen showed up. My favorite part of the day was hanging out with Mr Joe. He sat at my side and had a great conversation with me except when he was listening to the baseball game in his ear. Later, I went home with the Beaches and spent the night.

Sunday was great day. Today I am with my friends.  I went to their church and listened to a very good sermon on the  Holy Spirit preached by Adam Beach.  They also honored me for their graduation service since I was not able to be honored today at my home church.  After the service there was a lunch and a delicous chocolate cake! I'm now spending the afternoon with the Beach family as they watch more baseball and plan out the upcoming wedding. They have a large pet rat that is crawling around on everybody.

Tomorrow we start the whole program, officially. We will see how it all goes.  Please keep me in your prayers.

I told you that you would hear a lot of baseball talk! Knowing Mr. Joe, you will probably hear it in a sermon sometime! Church wasn't the same without you-you are missed:)

Dearest Emily,
You are on a fantastic life changing adventure! I watched the video about the Colorado Center for the Blind and it seems like an extraordinary place. Thank you for writing this blog and sharing your experience. It does not sound like they are going to wait on you! Your story about making breakfast was so interesting. After pouring dish soap on your waffle, I'm sure you will never confuse the syrup with the dish soap again!
I am curious to hear more about your living arrangement. How many room mates do you have, how old are they and are they from all over the country? Do you share a room? Is your counselor blind as well? I would love to know all the details!!!
I will be thinking of you tomorrow, your first day of the program. It is going to be a challenge. I admire your determination and courage, you are pretty amazing. Much love, Aunt Laura
